Hybrid Class Session: Sample Outline

In-person class with remote students (75-minute session outline)

Session Learning Outcomes 

At the end of this session, students will be able to: 

  • evaluate the effects of (Topic A) in their daily lives.
  • discuss the reasons (Topic B) is contributing to the (General Topic).

Welcome and mini-lecture (10 minutes)

Your (instructor) role: assign or request a student volunteer or TA to moderate the chat, present information on (Topic A), and pause for questions and comments

  • In-person students take notes and respond to any prompts or questions
  • Remote synchronous students take notes and participate in the live session (e.g., chat, other online interactions)
  • Remote asynchronous students review recorded session, take notes, and participate in a discussion forum or assignment

Writing activity (10 minutes)

Your (instructor) role: pose a prompt on (Topic A) and provide instructions for students

  • In-person students respond to the prompt on the Canvas Discussion forum
  • Remote synchronous students respond to the prompt on the Discussion forum
  • Remote asynchronous students review the recorded session and respond to the prompt on the Discussion forum

Mini-lecture (15 minutes)

Pair activity (30 minutes)

  • Your (instructor) role:
    • present a question on (Topic B)
    • allow them time to think about their responses
    • select one in-person student to be a bridge between in-person and remote students
    • manage breakout rooms or assign a host to do it
    • have students share with a partner
    • signal the end of partner sharing ahead of time
    • debrief with a few pairs
  • In-person students think about a response and partner with an in-person student to share
  • Remote synchronous students think about or write a response, join a breakout room, and partner with a remote synchronous student to discuss responses
  • Remote asynchronous students review the recorded session, think about a response, share in the discussion forum, and then respond to at least one other student

Mini-lecture & wrap-up (10 minutes)

Your (instructor) role: provide a summary of the session content, seek and answer questions, and announce the next session and upcoming assignments

  • In-person students take notes and respond to any prompts or questions
  • Remote synchronous students think about or write a response, join a breakout room, and partner with a remote synchronous student to discuss responses
  • Remote asynchronous students take notes and participate in the live session (e.g., chat, other online interactions)
