Join a dynamic group of graduate students and advance your own teaching skills!

Graduate students with an interest in teaching are invited to explore resources and build community within a cohort of graduate teaching assistants by applying to join the “Early Career Graduate Teaching Cohort” program (EGTC). The program offers the selected group of participants an opportunity to participate in a diverse graduate student teaching community, develop their individual teaching skills, and discuss effective and inclusive teaching practices.

Cohort members will develop their own knowledge and understanding of teaching practices, as well as explore offerings for further development across the university. The program offers participants a chance to connect with fellow graduate teachers across campus, thereby creating a network of support and communication. We are seeking applicants who demonstrate a commitment to improving their teaching skills, a willingness to engage in discussions about teaching, and an eagerness to actively participate in the cohort. 

Prerequisites

Currently enrolled, full-time Cornell graduate students with at least one semester of experience as a graduate TA are encouraged to apply to the Early Career Graduate Teaching Cohort. Those selected will be required to attend two cohort development sessions, occurring Friday, April 12, 2024, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and Friday, April 26, 2024, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The application deadline for the Spring 2024 cohort is Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. EST. 

Application process

To apply for the EGTC program, submit this application form, which will ask you to include the following information: 

• Name, NetID, and pronouns
• Field of study, degree program, expected graduation year
• Outline of graduate TA experience 
• Please upload a cover letter (500 words max) detailing:
  • Your interest and experience in teaching, including how you have demonstrated a commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion, access, and equity in the classroom and/or in general academic settings.
  • How your background and experiences would bring a unique perspective to the Early Career Graduate Teaching Cohort. This could include, but is not limited to, organizations that you’re involved in, awards and scholarships received, and/or professional development programs attended. 
  • How your participation in the Early Career Graduate Teaching Cohort will enhance your professional development goals.
  • Please also explain how participation in the EGTC will enhance your professional development goals.
