Respondus LockDown Browser: Pilot Opportunity

The Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI) will run a pilot program to use the Respondus Lockdown Browser to help make sure that in-class Canvas exams and assignments can be protected from AI completion tools. This pilot will run during the Fall semester and is available to any interested faculty.

As part of the pilot, CTI requests that participating faculty fill out a short survey near the end of the Fall semester, to help us understand their experience with this tool.. Note that students in courses that are part of the pilot will also be asked to share their experiences.

What to Know about Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser through which a Canvas quiz can be taken while ensuring students have no access to any external materials on the testing device. Additionally, LockDown Browser prevents students from copying, pasting, taking screenshots, or printing while the browser is in use. Canvas quizzes utilizing the browser cannot be completed through any other type of browser.

Note:

  • The use of LockDown Browser does not guarantee academic integrity — students may still have access to alternative internet-enabled devices. As a result, this browser is only intended to be utilized for in-person, proctored exams.
  • Cornell University is not piloting the separate Respondus Monitor product, which is intended for remote proctoring.
  • Devices managed by Cornell will need admin support to install LockDown Browser for taking assessments.
  • Before first using LockDown Browser for an assessment, we recommend running a no-credit test quiz in order to identify any technical issues that may need to be resolved.
    • For instance, if students plan to use iPads to take LockDown quizzes, they will learn that it does not function if they also have the Canvas Student app installed.
